Positano’s Le Sirenuse is loved the world over – for its rooms with views onto the church dome and cliffside candy-coloured houses that tumble down to the black beach; for its Michelin-starred dining served in the light of hundreds of flickering candles; for its slice of blue pool surrounded by lemon trees and its russet-red walls; and most of all for its easy Italian charm and the generous hospitality of the aristocratic family who have owned it for centuries – now the warmly welcoming Antonio and Carla Sersale. But it is not only the presence of this captivating couple that you feel as your espadrilles cross the threshold; Le Sirenuse also resonates with the memory of Franco, Antonio’s father, who died earlier this year. Photographs from his travels to exotic lands line the corridors: his absence is keenly, tangibly felt, and so on July 1 Franco’s Bar opened in his honour, to toast a life well lived and a man well loved. Adjoining the hotel and with direct access from the steep village street, the bar will be a draw both for guests and a new stopping-off point for locals on their evening passeggiata. A curtain of blue Murano glass beads pulls back onto a celebration of local artisans, talented friends and relatives: lamps by Orsina Sforza; handmade floor tiles by Cotto Rufoli; glasses from Venice courtesy of Laguna B; and a large stone sculpture with a centrepiece fountain by Giuseppe Ducrot. The menu offers the classic bellinis, proseccos, dry martinis and cocktails from Negronis to Caipiriñas (from €11), and here too you will be able to sip Krug a bicchiere – by the glass (€54) – as well as by the bottle (€250), Dom Pérignon millésimé (€245 for a bottle), or Billecart-Salmon rosé (€150 for a bottle) and soak up the views, enjoying the present as you celebrate the past.
