Lady or Slut? – Fetish Trend

Some of the runway shows of the A/W 2011/12 collections featured the fetish look big time – and I am not talking about shows of some new upcoming designers who try to get into the spotlight by experimenting with some borderline looks! Oh, no – I’m talking about established and famous brands like Louis Vuitton, Givenchy, and Marc Jacobs (yes, he is also the designer of Louis Vuitton!). Other collections like Alexander McQueen with its leather harnesses or Gucci with long patent leather gloves at least showed a certain bias towards fetish.

Expert Advice

If the editors of big fashion magazines pick up such trends and write long articles about how to wear it, I instantaneously feel a little bit uncomfortable. If these women feel that they have to give us so much advice how to avoid millions of pit-falls which clearly go with this fetish trend, there is something wrong.

For once, I am very positive that a lot of women anyway lack confidence to wear things like rubber or sheer skirts and thigh-high rubber boots – even if they would like to try it out. And there are also a lot of women who simply don’t like this trend and therefore leave it.

Nevertheless, there are for sure a few fashionistas who happily adopt the S&M stuff and wear it. But would these women listen to any advice at all? No matter if it’s expert advice from fashion magazine editors or the slightly surprised frowning of a good friend? With the fetish trend it is very difficult to walk the very fine line between looking edgy-trendy and slutty!

Don’t get me wrong! I do not dislike this trend completely but I don’t feel that it is going to be a block-buster in the stores. And for those of you who like to experiment with this styling, I would give some advice as well: Be brutally honest with yourself if you look into the mirror! If you feel that men would offer you money on the street, then you have clearly overdone it! Be especially careful if you have impressive breasts and wear big hair – in particular if blond and bleached!

Do this and leave that!

However, there are save ways to try out the trend. Instead of wearing high-heel stilettos, go for high-heel ankle boots with a rough look. Use a lot of colours to pare down the fetish look. Wear a tight leather pencil skirt instead of a rubber version. If you wear thigh-high boots, you should not show your cleavage as well. Mix patent leather with heavy knitwear. Make sure to wear the fetish look with allure and style. But if you are on the lookout for a new partner for life – don’t wear it at all! It might give all the wrong signals about you and entice the wrong “clientele” into flirting with you!

What I like…

I personally love the tight fitting corset-style belts (Louis Vuitton has a model to die for!) – I would team them with a long tweed pencil skirt, a cashmere sweater and flat sued leather boots, and I would mix and match lots or dark colours.

I love leather in dark brown and black – in particular those very comfortable stretch leather trousers/leggings (I’ve seen a beautiful model at D’ANNA here in Positano), and I pair them with a cashmere sweater and a piece of vintage fur but I strictly avoid a biker-style leather jacket with these leather trousers – too much!
