Window Shopping on a Bank Holiday

Positano News Amalfi and Sorrento Coast Lugano Switzerland

Is it a good or a bad thing to stroll around in a beautiful town like Lugano (Ticino / Switzerland) on a bank holiday? If my credit card could talk or at least move – it would scream of joy and jump up and down to show me its happiness about my inability to bust the limit…

Lugano is a gem – and the stores are much too tempting…

In Lugano I am always in big trouble! This beautiful little town right at LAGO DI LUGANO is a gem as far as its atmosphere and the variety of shops are concerned. Most people favour Locarno or Ascona at LAGO MAGGIORE but my personal number one is Lugano – it is far less touristy and has a lot more authenticity in its urban feel than Locarno.

This is the great thing about living in Switzerland – it is a very small country but due to the Alps which go right across it, we have the clear division between North and South. A two hours car drive from Zurich through the Gotthard road tunnel gets you into a different world – a different language, a different architecture, and different weather!

I started this morning at the Lake of Zurich at 16°C, cloudy sky, autumn feeling – and right after the 17 km tunnel I was welcomed by blue skies, great warm weather and summer feeling!

My hotel is smack-bang in the centre of the town – not very peaceful and quiet but I am here for pleasure not for a good night’s sleep! However, how much of a pleasure are closed shops? During the sale season? I know of course that 1st August is the official birthday of our country (720 years!) but I did not expect so many beautiful things behind closed doors…

The only Alternative…

So, what on Earth would I do to compensate this pain? If you cannot shop in Lugano, you should enjoy some food – in particular the sweet things like ice cream, and crepes, and all sorts of pastries…

I did not touch any sweet treats for weeks because I had enjoyed too much good food during my last stay in Positano in May/June. But today, I gave up and ate almost tons of ice cream – I tried at least 10 different flavours. And it was heaven! Just a stone throw from my hotel I discovered a hidden treasure – a GELATERIA from a different world. It is called “-9° GELATO ITALIANO”! They produce around twenty different flavours of ice cream every day from fresh ingredients. They use organic eggs, and fresh fruit, and the best cocoa – but no artificial flavours or colours or other funny stuff!

One day away from Shopping Heaven!

Despite all the closed shops it is a beautiful day here in Lugano – and considering the fact that I’ll be in Mendrisio tomorrow, my today’s shopping prohibition is a minor flaw…

Mendrisio – very close to the Italian border – means FOXTOWN. And FOXTOWN is the largest outlet department store you can think of – with all the famous and prestigious brands you are looking for. And the absolute highlight is the fact that they offer discounts of up to 70% in July and August… Yep – I know what you think! My credit card will suffer some abuse – I still need some shoes, and maybe a bag, or a nice dress, or some sunglasses…
