One of the most important natural monuments of the Cilento National Park collapsed in part and is in danger of being irremediably lost by the forces of nature. Steel netted for sometime already, the insistent and ever stronger rains of recent weeks brought down with considerable damage to the upper facade of The Natural Arch of Palinuro large masses of boulders and debris.
Fortunately there was no danger to persons or other surroundings. The Coast Guard at Palinuro effectively blocked off the area and posted no trespassing signs to alert everyone of the danger of further collapse.
The natural occurrence presented itself during Saturday and Sunday night of last weekend.Angelo De Vita director of the Cilento National Park familiar with the situation afffirmed that the collapse was a "pre-announced death of the Arch". For sometime geologists and naturalists had indicated that it would be difficult if not impossible to halt gthe natural destruction of the Arch.
