MIU MIU Campaign A/W 2011/12

I am aware that it is a though call to stand out of thousands of advert campaigns as soon as a new fashion season is looming. Ideally, a campaign has to be unique and completely different to what all the other competitors show. It certainly costs a lot of money and some brands go to – or even beyond – the limits to attract the attention of the crowd – we have not forgotten the BENNETTON adverts!
This time, I was completely puzzled when I first saw the new campaign pictures of MIU MIU. I do like this brand – in particular this season’s handbags. I love the ‘40s feel of the a/w collection. But I failed to understand why they featured Hailee Steinfeld, a 15 year-old girl, in their campaign…
No doubt, she is pretty – but at the same time, she is a very young girl and looks like a very young girl. She has the tiny hands of a child, and her cute face is that of a child and the way she is dressed – to me – just looks a bit odd.
Maybe it is intentional, and the whole idea of these pictures is that a girl had some fun with the pieces she found in the wardrobe of her mother.
On the other hand, MIU MIU wants grown-up women to wear their dresses. Trouble is that I have seen so many campaign pictures of pretty and young Hailee in the past weeks that it was in fact weirdly irritating to see a picture of an “older” model in a MIU MIU dress in Harper’s Bazaar. I could not get the child’s face out of my mind.
Maybe I am the only one who has an issue with MIU MIU’s campaign because I am watching these things so closely but despite the fact that I like these ‘40s dresses I cannot see myself wearing one – I might be too old for them…!
