Naked Truth
Positano costiera amalfitana amalfi coast.
Two artist friends, separated by oceans yet close in heart and mind, joined forces for the exhibition, "Creatures of the Wild" which opened at the Gallery of the Fountain at the Hotel Pupetto in Positano last Saturday, the 28th August. The artists are Gianni Menichetti, local poet, artist and environmental activist, with his delicate and unique Animal Portraits, and Lina Eve from Australia, artist and film maker, with her signed prints portraying sensuous nude images. Both artist were very surprised to find the exhibition was partially dismantled the next day because Lina Eve's nudes were proclaimed "offensive" by the hotel owners, who had pulled them off the walls of the gallery.
3 days after the opening, Gianni Menichetti closed the exhibition down saying he found the incident "absolutely unacceptable!" Both artists were shocked by the ultra conservative attitudes which caused the work to be removed from view.
Lina Eve said, "For centuries Italy has been world famous for its amazing art. Amongst the most beautiful, Michael Angelo's statue of David, the lovely nudes of Titian, Modigliani, & Botticelli, to name just a few. These wonderful Italian artworks inspired me to paint my modern mythical nudes. How strange to hear my work was "censored" by the hotel owners and pulled off the walls of the gallery! I have been painting, exhibiting and selling my work locally, nationally and internationally since 1994, but this is the first time any of my work has ever been removed! I'm totally amazed to hear my nude prints caused such controversy!
Have the owners of Hotel Pupetto forgotten the Great Art History of Italy, which has been depicting glorious nudes for hundreds of years? How can such conservative thinking exist in this day and age? Would the same people who pulled down the art, put a bag over their heads when they walk past a nude statue by Bernini or Michael Angelo? Do they avert their eyes from the beach at Positano, which is brimming with beautiful, partially clad bodies looking a lot more seductive than any painting? How can images of nude bodies, painted in tribute to the beauty of women, cause such offence? It's preposterous! Any offence in the images lies only in the narrow minds of the people who pulled the prints down"
Below "Goldie" one of the prints which was removed from the gallery wall as being "obscene." Lina Eve, Australia.
