We would like to inform the Cultural News bureaus of the Italian media that this October 26, 2011 marks fifty-four years from the death of the ecumenical Greek author, Nikos Kazantzakis.  In honor of this important anniversary, the Kazantzakis Publications [Patroclos Stavrou] is organizing a commemorative Symposium entitled Nikos Kazantzakis: in the Footsteps of the Man and Creator, to be held in Athens on Wednesday, October 26th 2011, the day of the 54th anniversary of the author’s death.

The purpose of this Symposium is to pay tribute to the steadfast and uncompromising Man of Crete, the author regarded as one of the Great Masters of World Literature, who honored Greece and Hellenism as only few individuals of the Arts and Letters have.

We are deeply honored to announce that an important part of the Symposium will focus on the work of Nikos Kazantzakis in Italy through a discussion of the contemporary translation of Zorba the Greek in the Italian language, which will be presented by the esteemed Neo-Hellenist Mr. Nicola Crocetti of the Crocetti Editore publishing house in Milan.

Mr. Crocetti is the official publisher and translator of the Kazantzakian novel in Italy, whose translation directly from the Greek language is considered one of the greatest ever produced, both by our own Publishing House (Kazantzakis Publications) which owns the copyright to the work Zorba the Greek, as much as by the Italian and international literary community. Currently, Mr. Crocetti’s translation of Zorba the Greek is in its second reprint, and has been met with extraordinary praise in Italy, and his recent ‘Omaggio a Nikos Kazantzakis’ (Homage to Nikos Kazantzakis) was presented at the Festival Internazionale della Letteratura in Mantova on September 11, 2011. Mr. Crocetti, who is a distinguished judge for the International Poetry Prize Attilio Bertolucci, publisher of the European Poetry Magazine Poesia, and Commissioner for UNESCO World Poetry Day, will be speaking about the work of Nikos Kazantzakis through the Italian perspective, and this presents a unique honor and distinction for both, the Greek and Italian audience.

In the course of the Symposium, the Kazantzakis Publications will introduce to the public its new publication entitled Entries by Nikos Kazantzakis in the Eleftheroudakis Encyclopedic Dictionary [1927-1930], a work which brings to light one of the lesser known aspects of the intellectual output of the great Greek thinker as the Encyclopedic Kazantzakis.

The Symposium will end with a tribute to Nikos Kazantzakis and the late Michael Cacoyannis, director of the legendary film, Zorba the Greek, with a viewing of the three-time Oscar award winning film. The Symposium will be attended by many eminent members of the academic community, the Michael Cacoyannis Foundation, representatives of the international community, and members of the domestic and foreign press.
