Sir Paul Smith (65), knighted by Queen Elizabeth II in 2000, did not remotely plan to become one of the most respected fashion designers of the presence. He left school at the age of 15, and his ultimate dream was to become a racing cyclist.
The father pushed young Paul into accepting a job in a clothing warehouse which bored the guy to death. A serious cycling accident and a half a year stay at a hospital eventually got him into a circle of good friends who were very much involved in the art and fashion scene.
Paul Smith was so fascinated by their lifestyle and this exciting colourful world that he took evening classes in tailoring.
Until 1998 he only designed men’s wear and was highly regarded for his excellent designs which in fact were quite classical but always had a “twist” – a quirky little detail which showed Paul’s signature!
The launch of his first women’s collection was 1998 at London Fashion Week. It might not come as a surprise that after decades of men’s collections, his clothes for women are quite manly or boyish in their appeal – but nevertheless very feminine, with an understated sexiness.
Key Looks – Key Pieces
His Autumn/Winter 2011/12 collection is – once more – a line-up of boys’ clothes for girls, however this time in a very British style. It is a decidedly relaxed – almost casual – way of styling a look. Smith offers a wide range of trouser cuts – everything between very generous and lose cut to very narrow. The jackets are manly, casual classics which last forever and will look so right whenever we take them out of the wardrobe again as soon as the temperatures start to drop…
My Favourite Pieces
I would love to have one complete look – I could pick each of the pieces and easily pair them with anything else that I find in my wardrobe for an easy and relaxed day!
