Oggi, 17 agosto, Discovering passa dal Medioevo all’età moderna.

Today, on August 17, Discovering passes from the middle ages to the modern age.
For modern age we refer to the period between 1492, year of the discovery of America, and 1789, year of the French Revolution, or 1815, the year of the Restoration after the Napoleonic debàcle. We see in this article, in short, the most important events of these centuries. We start with important cultural changes: the optimism, confidence in man and its possibilities, the principle of human virtues, which are philosophical and literary manifestations of a period known as humanism, which finds its diffusion in Renaissance expecially in Italy, whose courts are vital points of reference for artists of the time. It’s the time of the invention of the printing press by German Gutenberg, which gradually takes on a crucial role in the dissemination of the book. From this time onwards will be the geographical discoveries with new continents like America and Oceania. Later Martin Luther began the Protestant Reformation to combat the phenomenon of nepotism and the profound moral crisis, spiritual and material condition of the Church of Rome, with the subsequent “Italian” response given by the Counter-reformation. There were centuries of important scientific revolution and heliocentric and with the likes of Galilei, Copernicus and Kepler, but also those of the so-called absolutism, with a new idea of Empire, that of Charles V, Holy Roman Emperor, and monarchies, English, French and Spanish. In France there is, from 1643, to absolutist monarchy of the Sun King Louis XIV, who in fact proved a failure, as well as the Governments of later Kings, leading up to the French Revolution. In England the various scientific and technological discoveries led to the birth of the two Industrial Revolutions, with the introduction of the steam engine, the flying Shuttle, of oil, chemicals and electricity. Let’s not forget other two revolutions: the enlightenment and the American Revolution with the emergence of the United States. Modernity ends at Waterloo in 1815 with the defeat of Napoleon Bonaparte. In the next article we will see with more attention the discovery by Christopher Columbus.
